Simple Everyday Alternatives to Live a more eco-friendly life.

When you’ve lived a certain way all your life it’s at times difficult to step back, observe and consider that it may not be the best way to live. Growing up in a Mexican household it wasn’t unusual to reuse and repurpose items, as a matter of fact, it was necessary at times due to financial burdens. Countless times have I opened the fridge to find “Tupper ware”, which was actually just old food containers, filled with things other than what was once in them. Butter container? perfect size to hold the frijoles. Where’s the salsa? most likely in the yogurt container. Being resourceful was instilled in me since childhood, hand-me-downs clothes from older sisters and cousins were normal occurrences. However, as time fly by and I became an adult with a job and somewhere “being resourceful” was lost in translation.

Thank God, that my husband has a great job that allows me to be a stay-at-home mom and we are not financially burdened. However, being resourceful by reusing and repurposing items doesn’t mean you can’t afford new things. I want to live a more mindful life where I’m not consumed with unnecessary items that clutter my mind and space. I also want to help make an impact on our ecosystem even if it’s small.

For a few months, I’ve been slowly making changes that have helped me become more eco-conscious but also as a direct result has saved me money. It’s a win-win for me!

Plan/ Meal Prep

Aside from the obvious time and money-saving, meal planning is a great way to reduce food waste. I would consistently throw out veggies, yogurts, etc. every week that my family and I didn’t even touch. Now I only buy what I need for the meals I have planned. This method also takes the guessing games out of “what am I going to make”. If you want to go a step further, create your meals around in-season veggies and head over to your local farmer’s market. Take your reusable bags and support local small businesses.

Reuse Glass Jars & Containers

I am a very visual person, who loves aesthetics. Having mismatched jars and containers took some time for me to get used to. It sounds dumb that something so simple like containers not matching would bother me but it’s easy to fall into the “perfect eco-friendly” pantry trap when it’s all over Instagram. And let’s keep it real, we’re always scrolling the ‘gram or Pinterest, and that’s all we see. However, once you move past that ridiculous ideology of having to buy new containers you’ll find that you have exactly what you need already. Glass Pasta or jelly jars are what I use because that’s what I buy regularly so I try my best to reuse them as much as possible. They’re great for storing dry goods in the pantry or for propagating little pothos, the uses are endless.

Glass/Metal > Plastic

If you find that you still need other containers aside from the ones you reused and repurposed then opt for glass or metal over plastic. Remember, the end goal is to avoid using plastic as much as possible and use environmentally friendly materials. A few simple swaps that you can do today.

Educate yourself

Once you know better you do better. You don’t need to be a environmentalist to do your part in helping the world. Follow a few social media accounts that help explain what you should and shouldn’t do to help the environment and start implementing what you can into your lifestyle.

What do you do to make a positive Eco-friendly impact on the world? Let me know below!

Monthly Favorites: My Summer favorites for my 1 and a half year toddler

July was the beginning of some serious heat here in Cali so a lot of these items are summer staples that I’ve been using nonstop. Unlike other places, California summers run long into October so it’s never too late to start using some of these items if you live in California or any other “forever summer” states.

Over-sized Band Tee

Ever since it started heating up in California I’ve been opting for a more casual everyday look for Salome. I love the “Tom Boy” look on her. The look consists of biker shorts, an over-sized graphic tee shirt, and comfy sneakers or sandals. I girly it up by using pastel colorways for her biker shorts and the graphic design on her tee shirts. and the graphic design on her tee shirts.

Teva Original Universal Sandals

Salome recently started walking and she has been nonstop on the go! These Sandals have given her the confidence to let go and be on her own by helping with her balance. Aside from the balance, they are so cute! and are perfect for the hot summer days.

Solis Modern Wellness Bug Spray

This bug spray only needs one word to describe it, LIFESAVER! Every summer it’s the same story the mosquitoes come out to attack however, fortunately, this spray has kept my little one mosquito bite-free all summer long. This is a natural and chemical-free solution for the whole family.

Luca

If you are one of those parents that do not believe in “Screen time” keep scrolling because in this household we do a little every day. I allow my daughter to watch 1 movie a day with her dad once he’s back from work. So far this has been a great way for them to bond and while he still gets a chance to relax once he’s off of work. This movie is a beautiful story and I truly appreciate the effort Disney put into creating characters with different disabilities.

GoGo Squeez Fruit pouch

Like all moms, we are constantly doing something, forever busy dealing with life. These fruit pouches have been very convenient for on the go. I used to and still do make my version with reusable pouches but at times life takes over and you can make these so I usually keep these on hand just in case I didn’t have time to make my own. I love that these do not have any extra nonsense, just fruit.

Mother’s Day Gift Ideas 2021 Edition: The Best First Time Mom Mother’s Day Gifts From Target

Advertisements

Whether your currently pregnant or just gave birth to your little bendiciΓ³n its still just as exciting when it comes to your first mother’s day. Here are some ideas for those of you looking to spoil the first time mother’s in your lives.

You can never go wrong with some comfy clothes, especially as first time moms. Cozy slippers, lounge wear and a robe are great while waiting to pop, but quickly become essential when you’ve welcomed your baby into the world and you are thrown into new born survival mode.

If you are anything like me you need a good caffeine fix in the morning to get you going, especially after a long night of feedings and diaper changes. The Keurig is the most practical kitchen appliance for moms, it provides the mommy fuel lol. Don’t forget a cute mug with a motivational saying, it’s the little details that make all the difference.

Lastly, every mom loves to cherish memories of their little one but first time moms take the cake! We love to document every little thing, which after waiting 9 months to meet your little one its only right. Having your photos of your baby on your phone isn’t as fun as having the physical copy to hold and admire. However, who has time to go to Walgreens to develop photos anyways? Print them quickly during nap time and hang them as decor.

Congratulations and happy Mother’s Day to all the first time moms, enjoy!

Fall Wardrobe for Baby Girls: Simple and Affordable Must Have Clothing Items from Amazon & Lessi’s Closet

Salome is the Queen of Rompers! I said what I said, Periodt!

Salome is such a beautiful, healthy and BIG baby. Since she’s been born she never wore her size according to age like most babies do, which has come with its difficulties. For example, my baby girl is wearing a size 18 months and she’s only 6 months old. How is that even possible!! Most of the time I like to put her into rompers because everything else in size 18 months are for kids that are walking so it just doesn’t fit her rolling around, tummy time, sitting up lifestyle. Regardless, I really enjoy dressing her up even if its mostly in rompers.

Rompers have been great for the summer, however it’s not going to stop in the fall. I plan on layering her rompers with long sleeve onesies underneath and adding knee high socks.

Amazon

One of my favorite purchases from the items mentioned above are the shoes, especially the black mary janes. They were a great price and the quality did not disappoint. As well the knee high socks are perfect, they have withstood several washes, very stretchy and are a the perfect thickness. Honestly, everything pictured above I would recommend!

Lessi’s Closet

Follow them on Instagram: @Lessiscloset

Today only (10/09/2020) use promo code: CELEBRATE for 20% off

Lessi’s Closet was recommended to me by a friend and I love when a recommendation lives up to its hype! The whole vibe is very boho chic and that’s right up my alley for Salome. They carry some very unique items like the sunnies above as well as the cutest little bags. When my ordered arrived I was blown away by the packaging, the attention to detail was amazing! The items were bagged in a reusable drawstring baggies, which I was thrilled to see an eco friendly approach. On top of all that, the shop is run by a mom and I am all for supporting mommies with hustle.

I would love to hear about your fall must have outfits for your babies, comment down below!

Supporting Southern California Small Business: A Quick Reference Guide To Beauty, Fashion, Wellness and More!

After having survived and thrived during a world wide pandemic, many small businesses still need your support. After creating Solis Modern Wellness with my sister last year, I realized how hard it was to “shop small” especially since they are easily lost in the social media world, which for the most part is their main source of marketing. I took it upon myself to create a quick reference guide so that you can easily shop small for anything and everything. This list will continue to grow along side these small businesses and I hope it helps them out in every way possible.

Do you know a small business that should be on the list? Contact me!

Post Partum Hair Loss: 3 Supplements I’m Taking That Has Reduced Hair Loss and Stimulated Growth

I think I jinxed myself in my last post. I quickly mentioned how I haven’t been affected with post partum hair loss at the time… well I’m here reporting back that I have post partum hair loss and it SUCKS! I already heard from other moms how bad the hair loss can be, but I was not ready for how quickly it hits you. From one day to the next, I was shedding worse than a dog and within a few days I noticed thinning areas in my hair line. I took to instagram to ask for help from my fellow mommas and received several suggestions such as taking prenatals, washing my hair less and no pony tails. Aside from the advice I received, I quickly went to work and researched everything I could regarding post partum hair loss and found very little help. A lot of the information was vague and only mentioned “riding it out”, which to me was not the answer.

I have hypothyroid, which if you didn’t know already affects your hair growth and thickness. My once voluminous and thick hair is now fine and thin and has been for many years now, which only made matters worse when the post partum hair loss struck. My hair loss is particularly obvious on my hair line. I knew it was getting bad when I would lightly run my hand over my hair and a wad of loose hair would fall out. I jokingly would say that I’m going to end up looking like my husband Pelon, which is his nickname within his family lol.

However, all jokes aside this was so scary since the hair loss wasn’t slowly down and was actually getting worse as time passed. I know hair loss is a normal part of post partum, however I was determined to figure out a way to at least minimize or reduce how much hair was falling out. I was already taking a Hair, Skin and Nail vitamin daily, which I mentioned in my previous post for dehydrated & dry post partum skin, and occasionally when I remembered would take my prenatal vitamins. I decided to amp up my vitamin intake by adding collagen powder to the mix and see if it would help with my hair loss since I had literally nothing else to lose besides the last bit of hair I had lol.

What I Take Daily
What I Do
  • Wash my hair every few days
  • Detangle with a wide tooth comb
  • No hair ties or tight ponytails

Week 1: The first week of taking all three supplements I noticed little to no decrease in hair fall out. Of course, I wasn’t looking for a quick fix because that would be impossible, however I knew it would take some time to see progress so I kept going.

Week 2: Week 2 was interesting, I didn’t feel as though much changed from week 1 but I noticed little things. I was shedding as much as I was from week 1, however I had less hair on my pillow when I woke up and I didn’t have as many stands on my back through out the day. The little bit of progress I saw it was enough to encourage me to continue and stick to my daily supplement intake.

Week 3: This is the week I noticed my shower hair balls (gross, I know) were smaller. I kept track of my hair loss when I washed my hair every week and week 3 is when I noticed how much smaller the hair ball was compared to the previous weeks.

Now over a month later, my shedding is a little more than average which is a huge improvement to shedding like a dog. As well I’ve noticed regrowth in the areas I was thinning out! I’m going to continue to take the supplements and give an update within another month and hope that the regrowth continues along with less shedding.

Week 1 (9 Comb Bristles Long)
Week 2 (6 Comb Bristles Long)
Week 3 (4 Comb Bristles Long)

Using the comb as reference you can see that every week my hair loss balls were smaller and smaller.

I know the hair loss won’t last but working on reducing it has helped with my self conciousness about it and to me that’s as good as it gets.

I would love to hear from other mommas about their post partum hair loss experience and what you did to reduce it, let me know in the comments below!
